Oglethorpe Point Assistant Principal arrested

On August 8, 2018, at about 7:00 A.M. investigators with the Glynn County Police Department arrested 40-year-old Eric Cabrera on an arrest warrant for Child Molestation. Mr. Cabrera is currently the Assistant Principal at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School.

The arrest of Mr. Cabrera comes after an investigation into allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with a student on school property in 2014. Mr. Cabrera was a teacher at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School at that time.

The investigation began after the former student disclosed the inappropriate contact and the Glynn County Police Department were notified. Once the school system was notified of the investigation last week, the administration immediately took action and placed Mr. Cabrera on administrative leave.

“Once notified, the allegation was investigated thoroughly and a Superior Court Judge found that probable cause did exist for Mr. Cabrera’s arrest. It was important to bring some resolution to this before the new school year started”, said Glynn County Police Chief John Powell. “I am thankful for our working relationship with the Glynn County Schools Police, who provided support during this investigation when needed”, Powell said.Virgil Cole, Superintendent for the Glynn County School System, was disappointed to learn of the allegations but vows to not allow this to derail the momentum of the staff.

“While this news is very disappointing, we are going to pull together as staff to ensure students have a great school year at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School”, Cole said. The investigation into Mr. Cabrera’s conduct continues, and additional charges may be forthcoming. Any parent having information that could assist this investigation is asked to call Investigator Clay Palmer at 912-554-7847.
