GSU athlete on advisory committee resigns as controversial tweets surface

A student at Georgia Southern University has resigned from a leadership position after tweets featuring racial comments she made six years ago surface.

The student, Landon Jones plays volleyball at Georgia Southern and was president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Jared Benko, Georgia Southern Director of Athletics released a statement saying the group accepted Jones' resignation and apology. "We do not condone any form of racism within the athletic department at Georgia Southern." Benko said.

Jones posted a statement to Twitter apologizing and acknowledging times she used “racially insensitive language.”

“A lot has changed since I was a freshman in high school and that language does not reflect who I was then and certainly not today. I’ve spoken with my teammates. I take ownership of my actions and apologize to everyone that these words may have offended.” Jones said.
