Meat Puppets were formed in 1980 by brothers Curt & Cris Kirkwood with drummer Derrick Bostrom. The Phoenix based Meat Puppets released a trio (at least) of indie rock touchstones on Southern California's SST Records, known primarily for hardcore punk acts like Black Flag and Minutemen.
The trippy jangle of classic records like Meat Puppets II, Up On The Sun, and Mirage re-defined the sounds that could be considered within the punk rock pantheon and helped set the table for today's psyche, alt- country and jam-band genres.
Original drummer Derrick Bostrom left following 1995's Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers) produced No Joke! After a brief hiatus in the late Nineties, followed by some troubling personal times for founding bassist Cris Kirkwood, the band soldiered into the late 2000's with a somewhat transient line-up lead by guitarist Curt.
The Meat Puppets induction into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame in the summer of 2017 was the catalyst for the three original members of the band to gather for the first time since 1995.
With the original trio now complemented by Curt's son Elmo on guitar and recent collaborator Ron Stabinsky on keys, the group has set March 8th as a release date for their new album Dusty Notes.
Dusty Notes is the first album to include all three original Meat Puppets in nearly a quarter century, and the first from the group since 2013.
Derrick Bostrom was kind enough to hang out on the phone from his garage on Boxing Day to share his insight on the new material and what he calls the "re-gathering of the tribe".
